........
Yes I can't even describe how unreal this event was. I need a moment to collect myself....
Unfortunately we missed the Death From Above 1979 set. We
wanted to leave at 9am on Thursday but our ride couldn't leave til noon. No biggie, with the time change n all, we still would've had enough time. But regretfully Dave got held up at work with his mean tyrant bossman & we didn't get out of S'toon til 2ish! Talk about cuttin er close! We made it just in time to see Queens. Let me take a moment here to describe how SUCKY Calgary's crowd was...
We had seats just off the side of the stage 2nd level up. Not too bad. So we're standing & rockin to Queens with people behind us yelling to "sit the fuck down". NO-ONE WAS STANDING AT ALL!! I couldn't believe it. The mentality the whole show was something like "we're too cool & apathetic to even tap our toes". Lame-os. Whatever it didn't phase us, & they eventually stopped yelling. It was awesome to see Queens a 2nd time...although was more enjoyable in a smaller club like Reds. They still graced us with a 50 min set of stoner guitar goodness. I LOVE Troy Van Leeuwan!
NIN...
They started off with these massive sheer screens covering the stage & lights pulsing behind to the track Pinion off of the Broken EP. Immediately I'm freakin out at the chance to hear one of my fave songs, Wish, but like a teasing lover, they rip into a song I've never heard before. Apparentely unreleased (Love is not Enough), the band continues behind the screens & Trent's voice cuts through every corner of the arena. All you see is shadows. They then drop the screens to the pummeling of "You Don;t Know What You Are" & everyone ignites! I still can't believe I was there...
I was very very happy to hear lots of the Downward Spiral & even Burn from the Natural Born Killers Sdtrk. They had a perfect mix of frenzy, contemplative downtime, & pure drive. Definately one of the tightest live acts I've seen. To hear Terrible Lie & Something I Can Never Have, I'm still baffled by how
old those tracks were. Trent commented after playing Eraser (which was accompanied by visuals on the screens of anti-Bush images) that Calgary was the best show so far, thank you Canada, fuck the USA. Then Natty lost her mind as they played her ALL TIME fave song, Reptile off Downward S. EEK!!!!
They played for 90 mins & ended the show with Hurt (& a sea of lighters) & Head Like a Hole, which only made it to the second chorus due to Twiggy flippin out & smashing his guitar from the top of his speaker cabinet. The rest of the band followed suit & then boom it's done. I'm left out of breath, elated, & fully unable to speak. I only wish that my biggest known NINer buddie couldah been there with me. Let's keep our fingers crossed for March huh?
The rest of the trip went by pretty rank. We stayed in some cheap dive with no heat & massive arachnids & took forever to get back. Our buddie Dave kept getting the run around with his errands. I was still sick as a dog & just needed some comforts of home. But I SAW NIN!!
Thanks boys for topping my concert experiences...
