I arrived in Saskatoon yesterday at about 2:30pm. Talk about the longest flight ever! We had to land in Kelowna first, then switch planes in Calgary & finally land in good old SK. Let me tell you, I was so ready to pass out from the exhaustion of nerves & Gravol. I get to my baggage, lug it to a phone, & find out no one is available to pick me up. Now unfortunately the plan was for me to take a cab to Lawson & bus home from there; but an unexpected $30 cab ride to the Vancouver airport as well as a $15 breakfast, exhausted my funds! (Yeah I slept in...otherwise I would've bused it in Van & saved myself $50!! Getting up at 6am is just too hard!)
So here I am lugging my heavy-ass luggage (Bono can vouch for that...why did I pack so bloody much?!) & guitar down aiport road to McNab Park where I hopefully can catch a bus home. The weather is much warmer here than it was in BC so of course I'm over dressed, & having to pull a lopsided suitcase on wheels in the gravel is so not fun! I also have cars whizzing past me on my left spitting up rocks & giving the finger.
Come on people!! I'm sorry but if I saw a poor soul lugging their shit up the longest road ever, I'd offer them a ride, AT LEAST to the bus stop!!! So yeah I'm disgruntled, sweaty, & buzzing on Gravol. Equation for "Natty's not having fun"
Finally this shitty white van pulls up beside me, & this toothless cigarette smelling 60 yr old man offers me a ride. At this point, I don't care how unsafe this might be, after experiencing donwtown Vancouver this is a cakewalk! Anyway, the man is blaring some sort of gospel music which I later find out is himself singing in Cree. So he can't be THAT bad! Kinda kool, yet awkward. So I'm blessed to hear his life story of beating a life of alcoholism & turning to god. Hey may not be my bag, but kudos to you nice stranger, for beating the stereotype of native-canadians & turning your life around!
I get a ride to the bus mall being he's running out of gas but wow what a save! I finally make it home by 3:30 where my sister JUST pulls up from school. Great timing huh? Anyway that's my good karma of the day. Upon first looking at that man, someone might think alot of nasty things, but after getting to hear what he had to say, it made me really think about how horrible stereotypes & first impressions are in this society. I've made a promise to myself to def. act better in this...so thank you Mr good samaritan!!
